The Future of Connected Medical Devices (Part 2)
Two key chronic and wide-spread health care conditions – cardiac disease and diabetes care – are prime contenders to evolve existing technologies into wireless-enabled devices. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of deaths globally. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 17.5 million people died from cardiovascular disease in 2005, or about 30% of all global deaths. In this Huffington Post article, ”The Disease that Will Affect Half the Nation by 2020,” Andrea Pennington points out that diabetes, though not as lethal, affects 27 million people in the United States today and is predicted to affect 50% of Americans by 2020.

Harris Corporation Awarded Contract to Provide Engineering and Enterprise Support to Veteran Affairs's VistA Imaging System
Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has been awarded a contract by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to continue providing advanced software engineering and enterprise support to the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) Imaging System. This multi-year contract was originally awarded to Harris in August 2008.
New approach urged for government IT
A new report into government IT failures has warned that previous inquiries may have embedded problems by focusing on inappropriate ‘best practice’ instead of looking for alternative approaches. The report, from the Institute for Government, says “existing ‘best practice’ project models do not deal with the fundamental issues at the heart of government IT.”

Open Source Tool Helps US DoD Eye in the Sky To See
The US Department of Defense is awash in digital images and videos taken by a variety of sources including satellites, manned airplanes and unmanned drones. Going through all of that imagery by hand would take untold resources that the DoD just doesn’t have. Instead the DoD has turned to a computer vision program to help sort through the imagery. The programs they use are supplied by Kitware and get ready for this – are open source!

DataStax Preps Launch Of Cassandra Management Interface
DataStax, the first commercial company to offer technical support and consulting for Cassandra, has introduced a management interface for the NoSQL system....On Feb. 1 at O'Reilly's Strata big data conference in Santa Clara, Calif., the firm announced the beta version of its management interface, OpsCenter for Cassandra. The software is slated to become a generally available product by the end of March, said Pfeil.
