On today's World Health Day, I'd like to give you an inside look at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology's (ONC) global health IT work. Advancing digital health (or e-health) is gaining worldwide momentum as nations seek to leverage health IT. While each country and jurisdiction has a different approach to healthcare, global digital health advancements are becoming a common thread across the world. In December 2010, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the European Union (EU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to galvanize cooperation on advancing digital health in both regions. The MOU focuses on three areas: interoperability, workforce, and innovation.

Australia's Digital Health Strategy Gets the Nod Without Data Interoperability Controls
My Health Record, the Australian government's e-health record system, has been officially given the green light from the Council of Australian Governments Health Council to automatically sign citizens up to the service, allowing them to opt-out if they choose. By 2018, all Australians will have a My Health Record and by 2022, all healthcare providers will be able to contribute to and use health information in My Health Record on behalf of their patients. Commonwealth Establishes Australian Digital Health Agency to Complement My Health Record
The federal government has announced the establishment of the Australian Digital Health Agency and an advisory board comprised of doctors, informatics specialists, digital experts, and customer service executives tasked with ensuring the nation's health system is technologically up to date. 2018 OpenMRS Implementers Conference
We are thrilled to announce the 2018 OpenMRS Implementers’ Conference (#OMRS18) will be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya in association with HELINA 2018 (#HELINA2018), the biannual meeting of the Pan-African Health Informatics Association. Our hosts, the Kenya Ministry of Health, the Kenya Health Informatics Association (KeHIA – http://www.kehia.org) and the OpenMRS Kenya Community have organized a planning committee over the past few weeks, and they have set up regular planning meetings with the OpenMRS Events Team to ensure this is a world-class event.
