The Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a cross-industry initiative of the Linux Foundation that focuses on sustainably securing open source software (OSS), brought together US Government (USG) officials from the National Security Council (NSC), Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) among others with industry leaders at the Secure Open Source Software (SOSS) Summit 2023. Participants at the Summit discussed the security challenges for the consumption of OSS in critical infrastructure sectors and beyond and highlighted the shared responsibility needed to ensure the resilience of OSS in critical infrastructure.

OpenSSF: On A Mission To Improve Security Of Open Source Software

Open source software (OSS), once a niche segment of the development landscape, is now ubiquitous. This growth is fantastic for the open source community. However, as the usage of OSS increases, so do concerns about security. Especially in mission-critical applications— think medical devices, automobiles, space flight, and nuclear facilities—securing open source technology is of the utmost priority. No individual entity, whether developers, organizations, or governments, can single-handedly solve this problem. The best outcome is possible when all of them come together to collaborate. The Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) formed to facilitate this collaboration.

One of most exciting presentations at the VistaEXPO 2011 conference was given by Robert Wentz, Hospital Administrator and CEO of Oroville Hospital, a regional hospital in the beautiful mountains of Northern California. Oroville Hospital has achieved a whole series of milestones in close partnership with the VistA community.
