WikiLeaks’ publication today of the final Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Intellectual Property chapter text verifies that the pact would harm public health by blocking patient access to lifesaving medicines, Public Citizen said today. The latest leak of a secret TPP text reveals how the TPP would roll back the “May 10 Agreement” reforms brokered in 2007 between Democratic congressional leaders and the George W. Bush administration. It also reveals the contentious “death sentence” clause on biologics, or biotech drugs, which roiled TPP talks in Maui and Atlanta.

2018 Public Health Informatics Conference
It’s been nearly two years since the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) released its multi-article supplement, “Public Health Informatics: A Call to Action,” in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. Since then, it’s only become clearer that to effectively serve communities in today’s information-driven world, public health – and its cross-sector partners – must advance and strengthen its capability to transform data into action (e.g., services, interventions, and policies). But forging that capability is no easy feat. Challenges such as underdeveloped information technology (IT) infrastructure, lack of training, and insufficient workforce capacity have made public health informatics seem either intimidating or vastly inaccessible to public health professionals. Despite this, there is a role for informatics within every health department. The 2018 PHI Conference exists to help you learn that role through sessions, workshops, and peer-sharing opportunities that:

openEHR international use-cases: The importance of open data
Cattedra: Crossborder collaboration and regional joint registries. An innovative diagnosis of rare immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in children made possible with openEHR. The Cattedra project set up a joint registry and data exchange on rare diseases for children in the area of paediatric rheumatology using open data. The project connects Italian children’s hospital IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste and Slovenian University Medical Centre Ljubljana (the Division of Paediatrics). With openEHR data models and input forms, the partners aim to share knowledge and work on improving the therapeutic methodologies and diagnostic possibilities of rare immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in children.
