Cerner, Clients to Demonstrate SMART on FHIR, Deliver Education Sessions and Participate in Interoperability Showcase

April 08, 2015--KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cerner Corp. will showcase its commitment to advancing health care interoperability across organizational, supplier and geographic boundaries at HIMSS15, April 12-16, at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Several areas within the Cerner booth will illustrate interoperability regardless of solution, provider or location, as well as demonstrations of standards-based frameworks that enable information to be easily accessed from within electronic health records (EHRs).

  • SMART on FHIR Demonstrations

Cerner will demonstrate how it uses Substitutable Medical Applications & Reusable Technology (SMART®) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (HL7® FHIR®) to create a platform for innovation. Software developers can create applications to integrate information with the health record. Interoperability happens when patient information can move freely among different systems without barriers. Cerner will showcase solutions that help organizations advance their interoperability goals within the community and beyond.

  • Local Information Exchange

Cerner solutions securely connect care providers within a community with other providers and practices outside their organization. Cerner will showcase its solutions that make it easier for providers in the community to refer patients, send information to area laboratories and communicate with other practices. Cerner interoperability solutions securely connect these organizations to share information and collaborate electronically with other care providers.

  • Regional and Organizational Information Exchange

Whether it's a local Health Information Exchange (HIE), a state immunization registry or an organizational information exchange network among different facilities, Cerner solutions help health care facilities connect with each other. Cerner solutions provide the capability to share many types of clinical information, including electronic orders, results, clinical documents, images, immunizations and prescriptions.

  • National Information Exchange

Cerner is a founding member of the CommonWell Health Alliance, an organization committed to enabling nationwide interoperability. Within the Cerner booth, and at the CommonWell booth (3960), Cerner will demonstrate how CommonWell enables people to give providers access to their health information.

Education Session

Dr. David McCallie, Cerner, and Dr. Stanley Huff, FACMI, Intermountain Healthcare, will co-present on Extending the EHR Platform with Open Apps & Services. They will demonstrate multiple independently authorized applications running against commercial EHRs as well as other health information technology systems. Dr. McCallie and Dr. Huff also will show applications that visualize clinical data, provide decision support and integrate clinical data with external sources, including population health and HIE data.

The session will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 15, in Room N426 at McCormick Place.

In partnership with IHE, Cerner is a sponsor of the Interoperability Showcase, a live, interactive demonstration where Cerner and other health IT providers will collaborate to maximize the collective impact of their technologies.

Joanne Burns, senior vice president and chief strategy officer, Cerner, will share her personal experience with the disconnect in health care and the importance of connecting the information ecosystem to reduce the burden on patients and their families to share their medical records across different care venues and providers.

Burns will outline Cerner's approach to interoperability and discuss strategies to ensure information flows freely across device, organizational, vendor and geographic barriers.
