The Open Source Tsunami to Hit UK in 2012
....In 2013, every procurement executive will be asking the question: "So why isn't your product using open source software?" Quite an assertion given that open source software is practically excluded from most public and private procurement by its lack of license model. Lets look the rationale to support this assertion.
Technological Darwinism.
Product companies can't write operating systems or software frameworks from scratch every time they need one to create a new product. Its just not viable. They must use whatever they can from the open market. Open source software is their first port of call because it's transparent, freely accessible, modifiable and free from commercial issues with could diminish the value of core innovation. For innovators to survive and thrive, certain types of IP need to be commoditised or 'open sourced' to support unfettered innovation. This doesn't mean that open source automatically wins over proprietary of course, but its accessibility to innovators provides a competitive edge over proprietary rivals...
