Five Healthcare IT Leaders Adopt Carequality Interoperability Framework
Carequality, an initiative of The Sequoia Project, today announced initial implementers of the Carequality Interoperability Framework released in December 2015. The companies are athenahealth®, eClinicalWorks, Epic, NextGen Healthcare and Surescripts. The five organizations have agreed to provide health information exchange services for their customers under the comprehensive Framework, which consists of legal terms, policy requirements, technical specifications, and governance processes. Every year I walk the HIMSS floor and speak at HIMSS events with the hope that I can distill the conference sensory overload into a few key themes. In the recent past, big data, interoperability, personalized medicine, population health, and wearables were buzzwords in every booth. This year, the buzzwords were replaced by one overarching concept - providers and vendors must innovate or die. In the next 24 months we’ll see an accelerating evolution of fee for service into alternative payment models fueled by MACRA and MIPS

Will Carequality Lead EHR Vendors to EHR Interoperability?
The Sequoia Project and Carequality have taken significant steps forward in advancing EHR interoperability by brokering agreements with several health IT vendors to implement its framework for point-to-point health information exchange. Five big names in health IT — Epic Systems, athenahealth, eClincalWorks, NextGen Healthcare, and Surescripts — recently signed on to be the first implementers of the Carequality Interoperability Framework, the legal agreement that streamlines the sharing of health information between these various systems.
