VistA Webinar-Infrastructure Foundations, by Greg Kreis
When armed with an understanding of the infrastructure foundations of VistA, new developers will write better software, new support staff will provide quicker diagnosis and current Application Coordinators can better function as liaisons. This presentation provides a high level overview of the VistA Infrastructure modules. Emphasis is placed on the roles, interactions and the interfaces to these infrastructure modules that form VistA's foundation.

DoD/VA iEHR & Government HIE Summit
The Defense Strategies Institute (DSI) recently announced a conference to be held on October 11-13 at the Sheraton Suites in Old Town Alexandria, VA. This DoD/VA iEHR and Government HIE Summit event will focus on some of the challenges involved in and solutions required for maintaining/improving the integrated electronic health record (iEHR) and government health information exchange (HIE).
Designed to attract leaders from the U.S. military, government agencies, and various industries and academia, this non partisan effort will “reach across all services and organizations to bring together a truly holistic group of decision makers and solution providers” to provide “unparalleled networking opportunities” and a forum where current challenges and practical health information technology (HIT) solutions can be intelligently discussed and debated. It also functions as an educational and training summit where participants will gain crucial insights from senior-level speakers and will have ample opportunity to interact with the faculty and offer their own insights.

OpenMRS 2011 Implementers Meeting
This meeting provides an opportunity for developers to collaborate and improve their technical skills in OpenMRS, implementers to share their best practices from implementations, and users to propose and prioritize their top features in future releases of the software. Different from the previous meetings, the 2011 Implementers Meeting will also include visits to OpenMRS implementation sites along with a discussion afterward for participants to share their experience and suggestions.
This year’s meeting will provide an opportunity to visit to an OpenMRS implementation site. Seats are limited, so please indicate on your registration form if you are interested in participating.

Ohio LinuxFest 2011: Open Source Software Conference and Expo
Ohio LinuxFest, one of the largest and best attended Linux and Open Source conferences in the U.S., will feature a Medical Track for the first time this year. The track will present a whole range of major developments in the open health community. Ohio LinuxFest (OLF) is an annual grassroots conference for the Open Source community. Organized and run by volunteers, it will be held this year from September 9-11 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. The conference includes an expo area for companies and open source software organizations to set up booths.
The conference will include an Open Source Medical Track from 11 AM to 5 PM on Friday, September 9, featuring talks from noted authors, bloggers, and speakers such as Samuel Bowen, Dan Paoletti, and Ruth Suehle.
Transfer Summit 2011: Open Innovation Everywhere
On September 5-8, TransferSummit will host an Open Source conference and training sessions at Keble College in Oxford, UK. The event provides an opportunity for business executives and members of the academic and research community “to discuss requirements, challenges, and opportunities in the use, development, licensing, and future of Open Source technology.”
This year’s event features a two-day conference and two days of training in addition to hands-on learning and break-out sessions, gadget “playtime,” and an intimate setting of no more than 300 participants. Open Medicine: Rethinking the Translational Research for the -omic Era
The integration of informatics, social networking, biobanking/biotechnology and clinical medicine is poised to deliver new translational targets for diagnostic and therapeutic questions in clinical medicine. Clinical medicine and research have steadily separated themselves over the past few decades.
Creating a novel model to harvest community-based clinical practice and harness it for translational research purposes bring clinical practice and research closer together in a practical manner, enabling rethinking of poorly defined diseases and refocusing clinicians on better defined outcomes for any disease - a grand step towards better personalized medicine.
Building a collaborative network involving community clinicians, hospitals, academics, and industry partners is key to the success of this model. Impact of this network to date in practice settings and collaborative environments will be discussed as well as future directions

Military Open-Source Software Group To Hold Third Annual Meeting in Atlanta
Critical cyber-technology will be among the featured topics at the Military Open Source Software (Mil-OSS) organization's Third Annual Working Group Conference scheduled for Aug. 30 - Sept. 1 in Atlanta.
The conference is open to anyone utilizing or considering open-source/open technology to build military capabilities -- including civilians, academics, contractors and uniformed personnel. The three-day agenda includes numerous talks, meetings and presentations, several keynote addresses, and two evening socials.
Among the events already determined for this year's event will be a LexisNexis presentation on its high-performance computing cluster (HPCC) technology, which utilizes an open-source model. HPCC systems have been used for the past 10 years with enterprise-class organizations, including government agencies.

MIE2011-User Centred Networked Health Care
On August 28-31, the Norwegian Society for Medical Informatics (FDH) and the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) will host the 23rd European Medical Informatics conference (MIE2011) in Oslo, Norway. The conference's theme this year is "User Centred Networked Health Care." In addition to keynote speeches and "parallel tracks with oral presentations of accepted contributions: papers, panels and poster," there will also be an application-oriented track with EFMI corporate members.
