The Front of the Line

More people in the world have cell phones than access to a toilet.  The power of technology and the ability to own some type of mobile device has become a necessity for millions of people around the globe, including the world’s poor.  FrontlineSMS is a platform software that allows non-governmental organizations (NGO) to communicate and work with those of developing countries.  It is a free and open source software that allows users to send and receive text messages with large groups of people wherever there is a mobile signal.

In January 2010, FrontlineSMS had worked in conjunction with Ushahidi and inSTEED to create a “911” emergency response system after the Haitian earthquake.  By texting “4636” (INFO) people were able to send out their need and location, enabling responders to react to that information.

May 2011, FrontlineSMS installed a Mobile Message series in the Philippines.  This installment allowed healthcare workers and expectant mothers to communicate through text messages.  The two-way communication advancement allowed pregnant women to voice their concerns, questions, and needs to health care workers and medical staff.  Their issues were answered along with information ranging from neonatal care, child immunization information to breastfeeding.
