'Open' Scheduling Solution

This would be an excellent opportunity for the VA to work with the open source community to acquire or develop an open source solutions under the auspices of the new Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent (OSEHRA) initiative. Collaborating with the growing open source community makes a lot of sense, rather than attempting to once again purchase a costly commercial solution that must then be tailored to work with the existing VA VistA health IT system. As the article in Government Health IT states, the VA attempted unsuccessfully to acquire a commercial replacement for their Scheduling system previously, but had to pull the plug on the project in 2009 after spending $127 million because the vendor had not delivered planned capabilities.
