Most of us have sat for hours and hours in a dark and cold room, taking pictures of stained cells or tissue sections. But analysing and quantifying all those colourful images with customary software programmes can have its flaws. Therefore, Pasi Kankaanpää from the University of Turku, Finland and colleagues came up with a new “high-throughput image processing platform” and published it in Nature Methods.

Lead author Kankaanpää shares what sets BioimageXD apart from conventional analysis software. “Some of the advantages that may be difficult to find in other software packages are the file and memory handling strategy that enables accurate scientific workflows and high-throughput applications. These are supported by command pipelines that can be easily created, without programming skills, by combining almost any tools from one of the most versatile tool collections available in a bioimaging software. This enables the software to be used in complex and high-throughput applications that might otherwise be quite difficult to carry out..."
