Continuing its pursuit of a widely-adopted, interoperable, and user-friendly patient portal, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) has announced the winners of its competition to provide a comprehensive redesign of the Blue Button interface.  The design improvements come alongside a rebranding of the initiative, now known as Blue Button+.  After opening the contest to graphic designers in late October of 2012, the ONC received more than 230 entries and chose winners in four important categories.

“Nightingale”, a bright and easily readable layout provided by Chicago firm gravitytank, received the $16,000 prize for Best Overall Design.  Incorporating icons, color-coding, and collapsible drop-down menus for quick navigation, the design allows patients and providers alike to search through records and find important information.  The interface is also available on mobile platforms.
