Gulf War veterans have reported symptoms of illness that are still mysterious. Researchers, for the first time, have uncovered two types of Gulf war illness from research findings that they say come as a surprise and are the result of brain atrophy.

Symptoms can be mild to debilitating and include headache, fatigue, pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and difficulty with cognition.

Scientists have pinpointed two distinct forms of Gulf War illness that has yet to be recognized by the public medical community by looking at brain changes following exercise stress tests.

Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) say the two types of illness may depend on what region of the brain is affected by atrophy or shrinkage.
