OpenMRS January 2013 Contributor Of The Month: Saptarshi Purkayastha
Editor’s Note: Starting in 2013, we will be highlighting an OpenMRS contributor every month, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the people building the OpenMRS software and community. More information about the Contributor of the Month program is available on the OpenMRS wiki...Saptarshi Purkayastha is from Mumbai, India and currently lives in Norway for work. He is a Research Fellow at the Department of Computer & Information Science, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where he is enrolled in the PhD program and works as a researcher in the domain of Health Information Systems for developing countries. His research group is the HISP Project at the University of Oslo, so Saptarshi spends most of his time there. OSEHRA 2018 Leadership Award Recipients Recognized
OSEHRA recently announced this year’s 2018 Leadership Award recipients during our 7th Annual Open Source Summit. The OSEHRA community chose to honor four distinguished individuals based on their outstanding achievements in health information technology and contributions to innovative health care. Awardees were selected via a community nomination and election process. We would like to extend a thank you to the 2018 Awards Committee for its due diligence and commitment to the community. The Committee was co-chaired by Dr. Jack Taylor of InforMD, Inc. and Keith McCall of KRM Associates, Inc.

OSEHRA 2018: Perspecta Sponsors Open Source EHR Summit
OSEHRA is delighted to welcome Perspecta as the Conference Sponsor for our 7th Annual Open Source Summit, to be held this July 18 – 20, 2018. Officially launched less than a week ago on June 1st, Perspecta was formed through a merger of the U.S. Public Sector Business of DXC Technology with Vencore Holding Corporation and KeyPoint Government Solutions. Those of you who follow the industry know that DXC Technology was the result of a massive merger of Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) and HP Enterprise Services (which also included EDS). So, while the name is new, Perspecta will bring a wealth of experience (and yes, perspective!) to this year’s event.

The Value of EHR Interoperability that Money Can't Buy
There seems to be something missing in our national debate about health care and the use of health information technologies (IT) in this marketplace. Do we want a more 'open' healthy society, or a more closed system? What role should markets play in public health and medical sociology? How do we decide which EHR solutions to acquire? Should we be looking more closely at open source alternatives versus proprietary programs. Should money, quality of care, or some other non-market values determine what's best for the patient? This cuts to the heart of the debate. Consider the hospital that chooses to not pay an expensive proprietary EHR vendor for the enhanced code required by a doctor in order to get the latest real time knowledge for treating a patient's disease.

Wall Street Journal: "ObamaCare’s Electronic-Records Debacle"
This Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Op-Ed could have been entitled "President Sucker: Led Down the Garden Path by The Healthcare IT Industry." It is entitled "ObamaCare’s Electronic-Records Debacle", as below. First, though: On Feb. 18, 2009 the WSJ published the following Letter to the Editor authored by me...I have a different view on who is deceiving whom. In fact, it is the government that has been deceived by the HIT industry and its pundits. Stated directly, the administration is deluded about the true difficulty of making large-scale health IT work. The beneficiaries will largely be the IT industry and IT management consultants.

“Write Code! Save Lives!” OpenMRS Meet in Malawi Shows the Way
More recently, I attended the 12th annual International OpenMRS Implementers’ Conference in the capital city of Malawi, Lilongwe, from Dec. 12 to 16, 2017. At this annual event, volunteers, developers and implementers came together to talk about all things OpenMRS and develop strategies for the evolution and applications of the software....Meeting this determined and committed community has boosted my drive and sense of purpose for writing code. I feel like this is the kind of project that I can contribute code to for many years to come. At the conference, I was reminded of a common Global Health Corps saying: “Once a fellow, always a fellow!”

openEHR and FHIR – Fiends or Foes? - HIGHmed Symposium 2021
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for interoperable and scalable data infrastructures within healthcare has become even more apparent. National and regional governments address these challenges by introducing open platforms, a novel paradigm to enable the data flow required to harness the full potential of big data in medicine. To underline the importance of open platforms, and to provide examples of novel implementations to political stakeholders and the health IT community, we dedicate our this year’s HiGHmed Symposium to openEHR and FHIR, the underlying eHealth standards of the data environment of tomorrow.
