Health & Wellness Wireless Sensor Networks To Be Worth $16 Billion In 2017, Says ON World

Press Release | ON World | March 13, 2013

ON World’s recently published report covers 16 unique wireless sensing applications that are transforming health and wellness for chronic disease management, operational management, assisted care and general wellness.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

Cloud connected wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are changing the way consumers and healthcare organizations think about health and wellness, according to global technology research firm ON World. Smart mobile devices connected to sensing and control networks have created new opportunities where none existed just a few years ago.

In 2017, 18.2 million health and wellness WSN systems—excluding sports/fitness devices-- will be shipped worldwide and annual revenues enabled by these systems will reach $16.3 billion. Cloud connected services will make up 53% of the revenues in five years.

“In addition to reducing costs, cloud connected wireless sensing solutions are improving the quality of healthcare services as well as supporting the latest innovations for aging in place, self-management of chronic conditions and general wellness,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s director of research.

ON World has identified 16 wireless sensing applications that are transforming health and wellness. In 2017, solutions for chronic conditions such as blood glucose management and cardiac/ECG monitoring will make up 60% of the revenues. However, general wellness will increase by 1600% over the next five years when it will make up 41% of the device shipments.

Health cloud platforms combined with sensor networks are providing bundling opportunities for telehealth, telecare and home service providers. Recent alliances to exploit these synergies include ADT with Ideal Life, AT&T with Numera and Honeywell HomMed with MobileHelp.

From an analysis of over 100 health and wellness WSN products, ON World found that over half are focused on self-management, prevention and general wellness. Smartphone and cellular innovations include diabetes management systems from Cellnovo, Sanofi/AgaMatrix and Telcare, AliveCor's electrocardiograph (ECG) monitoring system and Omron's NFC blood pressure monitor. Cardiocomm Solutions offers a handheld consumer ECG product that can be used with a FDA approved software program for home use and remote monitoring by a physician. A growing number of Bluetooth health products are emerging for use with smartphones. Some of these include blood glucose monitoring systems by BodyTel and Entra Health Systems as well as blood pressure monitors by iHealth Lab.

For this report, ON World surveyed over 750 consumer early adopters, developers, manufacturers, service providers and healthcare organizations. “Health & Wellness Wireless Sensor Networks” covers the global market for wireless sensor network (WSN) systems used for health and wellness including an in-depth analysis of 16 unique applications for chronic disease management, operational management, assisted care and general wellness. The technologies covered in the report include Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Smart, WiFi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, ANT, BodyLAN, NFC and others. Market size forecasts are for equipment and services with breakdowns by market segment, application, system, user/patient, device, chipset, product design and technology.
