Oroville Hospital’s Scheduler: a winning technology
On October 3rd, the winners of the US Dept of Veteran’s Affairs’ (VA) Medical Appointment Scheduling Contest were announced. In second place was the OH Scheduler, which was the submission from Oroville Hospital in California. I’d like to expand on their press release and provide some background to the technology that was used to develop their scheduler: it’s very much a case study of everything I’ve been talking about in my blog The EWD Files. As it happens, the OH Scheduler was first and foremost designed and developed for use at Oroville Hospital. However, since their Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) is based on the VA’s VistA system, Oroville Hospital believed that it should also meet many of the key requirements of the VA and therefore submitted it as a contender for the VA’s competition. OSEHRA & EHR: Finding Value in Open Source EHR
With federal funding and the support of the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD), OSEHRA challenges the US government’s traditional approach to publishing technology, “the museum approach.” According to Mun, in this method the government produces a technology, releases it to the public, and leaves it to users to continue its development. The establishment of OSEHRA represents a novel approach by the US government that embraces open source innovation.

OSEHRA 2012: 1st Annual Open Source EHR Summit
OSEHRA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent, will convene the 1st Annual OSEHRA Open Source EHR Summit, 17-18 October 2012, at the Gaylord National Convention Center, Washington, D.C. The "Summit" will not only assemble the OSEHRA Community, now numbering over 1,000 individuals, for the first tiime, it will also provide a venue for Open Source Health IT Training and Educational Workshops. Robert Wentz, President and CEO of Oroville Hospital, addressed a packed audience of more than 400 participants at the 1st Annual Open Source EHR Summit held October 17 & 18 at the Gaylord National Conference Center at National Harbor, MD, just outside Washington D.C. Wentz spoke during the keynote opening panel of the conference. The Summit was hosted by the Open Source Electronic Health Records Agent (OSEHRA) organization, the custodial agent of the open source software code for the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs' (VA) VistA EHR system.

OSEHRA 2012: Robert Wentz Wows Audience At EHR Summit
Robert Wentz, CEO and president of Oroville Hospital, spoke about the hospital’s success in implementing open-source electronic health records at a summit held outside of Washington, D.C., on Oct. 17 and 18. Wentz (pictured) spoke to a packed house during the keynote opening panel of the first-ever Open Source EHR Summit in National Harbor, Md., which was hosted by the Open Source Electronic Health Records Agent organization. Oroville Hospital was the first hospital in the nation to self-implement the open-source system, using VistA (Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture) to digitize its patient records, according to an Oroville Hospital press release...
