Without Real Interoperability, Are Providers Paying Too Much for EHRs?
Would you pay top dollar for anything—a car, phone, television, whatever—that promises truly transformational technology at some unspecified future date? I doubt you would. We generally buy products for what they offer now, not what the company says they will eventually do (vaporware, as IT calls it). And yet, so many hospitals pay multi-billions of dollars for healthcare IT systems that promise to integrate patient care … eventually. Why? Some argue the primary reason is a false market that was created by federal government incentives and boundless faith.

Wyoming Department of Health Joins Forces with Medicity to Develop Statewide Health Information Exchange
Medicity, a leading expert in clinical data aggregation and interoperability, announced its partnership with the Wyoming Department of Health to form a statewide, medical community-owned health information exchange (HIE). Following a thorough assessment of the state’s health information environment, the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) determined the need to establish a secure venue for providers to obtain patient information across the state. The Wyoming Frontier Information Exchange (WYFI), a centralized repository of clinical data for participating patients, will utilize Medicity’s data aggregation and interoperability capabilities to meet the needs of its population’s health, while improving quality of care.

ZH OpenEMR Announces Lab Interface For OpenEMR
ZH Healthcare recently announced the certification and availability of Lab Interface services. This capability will be utilized in the ZH OpenEMR solution and is available for the community version of OpenEMR as a monthly subscription. The interoperability provides bi-directional capabilities to integrate lab orders and results directly into patient records. The interface will save providers time and money by simplifying workflows and reducing the number of unpaid orders. Clinical and operational quality will improve due to the reduction of manual entry errors and timeliness of lab results.

ZibdyHealth offers a Simple and Secure Way to Consolidate and Manage Health Records
Zibdy, Inc. announces the launch of their secure and free DIY tool within ZibdyHealth application to consolidate medical records (http://www.zibdy.com) using Microsoft Azure. Following the Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act, Zibdy, Inc. has announced that their platform – ZibdyHealth – addresses and provides a solution to a key goal of the ACA and HITECH act – consolidation and exchange of Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Given that patients often have records located in 5 or 6 patient portals, medical record consolidation is an important challenge which ZibdyHealth has now addressed in their free application.
