Emergency Open Source EMR Created In A Week To Respond To Covid-19 Crisis

A team from Regenstrief Institute leveraged OpenMRS, a global open-source electronic medical record (EMR), to create an emergency EMR for Indianapolis first responders preparing for a possible influx of COVID-19 patients. This process was completed in a week to allow Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) to register patients, collect basic clinical information, and send these encounters to Indiana's health information exchange, a crucial element to help the response to the COVID-19 pandemic...This work demonstrates that it is possible to leverage existing tools to create EMRs in emergency situations to improve crisis response. "We learned valuable lessons from this experience that can be applied to future emergencies. This system can be adapted to work in other states or even countries, and it can be done very quickly," said Burke Mamlin, M.D., a project leader and member of Regenstrief's Global Health Informatics program. "This shows the value of open source and how it can lead to global goods that can benefit us in the United States."

PwC to Offer DoD Open Source EHR

PwC US announced Friday it would put in a bid for the Department of Defense EHR contract, proposing an open source system. Leveraging investments already made by the government into the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance by merging open source software with commercial applications, PwC plans to combine its healthcare operational and transformation capabilities with commercial EHR vendors DSS and MedSphere, and systems integrator General Dynamics Information Technology. By now, it should be no secret that physicians in the United States, although largely receptive to the idea of electronic health records (EHRs), are widely dissatisfied with the current state of the art, and with the way that EHR adoption is being implemented.[1] Indeed, Congress[2] has shown continuing – but sometimes seemingly perfunctory – interest in the concerns of physicians and other health care providers, and I am at this point pessimistic about seeing any results of its efforts in the near future unless a more fundamental change is made in our approach. Charles Caskey, Ph.D., and Will Grissom, Ph.D., at the university’s Institute of Imaging Science (VIIS) decided to address the technical difficulty of configuring focused ultrasound (FUS) equipment and the limited number of commercial machines available at present. "The lack of well-described, accessible, pre-clinical focused ultrasound systems limits progress and decreases repeatability of new developments,” Dr. Caskey told the Focused Ultrasound Foundation website. “Our open-source system can deliver repeatable, precise, and quantifiable thermal and mechanical focused ultrasound over an extended period in small animals.” Read More »
