OpenMRS Community Announces Malawi will be the Host Country for OMRS17
OpenMRS Global Events Manager Christine Gichuki announced yesterday that Malawi has been chosen as the host country for the OpenMRS 2017 implemeters meeting (OMRS17). This is a major milestone for the OpenMRS project. OMRS16 was hosted by the government of Uganda last year. The conference was a major success as I decribed in a presentation at the recent OSEHRA 2017 meeting in Bethesda, Maryland. This will be the second OMRS meeting that is hosted the by a national goverment. The incredibly successful meeting in Uganda is described in this article.

OpenMRS Conference in Uganda Redefines Global Health IT Collaboration
Hundreds of developers and health experts gathered in Uganda this past December to attend the OpenMRS Implementers conference. This event has in many ways redefined the global health IT landscape. This is the first OpenMRS conference that has been officially sponsored by the government of a nation, setting the stage for future conferences that can bring together open source developers and government officials to build national health IT solutions. OpenMRS Holds World Wide Summit in Singapore
OpenMRS held its first annual World Wide Summit for interested participants and contributors (including developers and implementers) in Singapore from December 8-14, 2015. The World Wide Summit meeting is designed to create a collaborative global space to share and discuss work and ideas about OpenMRS, showcase innovative development that has occurred over the last year, and support an OpenMRS Hackathon. This first annual summit was planned to build, support and grow the OpenMRS community as well as the OpenMRS software suite. The conference was attended by over 100 participants from 6 continents. There were more than 50 sessions by close to 30 speakers.
OpenMRS Receives Mozilla Open Source Support Program Award for COVID-19 Response
When the OpenMRS community learned about the COVID-19 Solutions Fund set up by Mozilla as a part of their ongoing Mozilla Open Source Support Program (MOSS) in early April, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to support our community's COVID-19 response. The idea at the time? Build out a suite of science-based COVID-19 tools that could also be used for future disease outbreaks - and make them easily available to people looking for a way to manage COVID-19 patient data and surveillance efforts. OpenMRS Inc became one of 163 applicants from 30 countries that MOSS received within two months. We are honored to be among the six awardees to date, receiving a $49,754 award that will advance the COVID-19 Response Squad's work over the next three months.

Regenstrief Institute Research Scientist Theresa Cullen, M.D., Receives Women In Leadership Award
Regenstrief Institute research scientist Theresa Cullen, M.D., has won a Leading for Impact, Women in Leadership award. The award recognizes women who are creating impact and leading programs across the federal technology, health and consulting community. The award is given by FedHealthInnovation & Technology (FedHealthIT), which is a consolidated news source for information related to federal health agencies. Dr. Cullen also is the associate director of the Regenstrief Institute Global Health Informatics program and the interim director of strategic planning and communications for LOINC. She recently led a project to help the United States government's Indian Health Service identify and define its needs for a new health information technology system.

Regenstrief Scientists Receive Prestigious Award for Innovation in Biomedical Informatics
Burke Mamlin, MD, and Paul Biondich, MD, of the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Medicine will be honored on November 12 with the 2016 Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Innovation in Informatics. The award will be presented by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the largest international professional biomedical informatics association, at its annual symposium. Dr. Mamlin, an internist, and Dr. Biondich, a pediatrician, are pioneers in the development, testing, and use of open source software to support the delivery of health care in developing countries...

Regenstrief to Highlight Open Source Projects for Health Information Exchange, Data Analysis at MedInfo 2015
Regenstrief Institute investigators experienced in the use of data to improve health care and its delivery in resource-constrained environments will introduce attendees at MedInfo 2015 to open source options for health information exchange and data analysis. Regenstrief investigator Shaun Grannis, M.D....and colleagues will present a workshop on OpenHIE, an international health information interoperability initiative supported by a growing community of governments, organizations, companies and individuals. Dr. Grannis, associate professor of family medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, is OpenHIE's chief architect, spearheading overall design.

Report on ONC’s Working Session on Patient Identity and Matching
On Monday, August 31, I attended the final Working Session on Patient Identity and Matching. This virtual event was hosted by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). This Working Session was a followup to an earlier session back in June 2020. The event last week had over 300 attendees and covered a wide range of topics and technologies related to patient identity and matching. These ONC Working Sessions are being driven by requirements that are part of the 21st Century Cures Act as well as a Congressional request from December 2019 to continue to "...evaluate the effectiveness of current [patient identity and matching] methods and recommend actions that increase the likelihood of an accurate match of patients to their health care data." Much of the focus of this study has been on whether a national patient identifier should be implemented in the US.

Rwanda Hosts Summit of Open Source Health Software Consortia
[From] September 24th - 27th 2012 a host of international health information professionals participated in Kigali’s first ever Open Health Information Exchange (OpenHIE) symposium. The Anvil Podcast: OpenMRS
Several weeks ago I went to the O’Reilly Open Source Convention in Portland, Oregon. The OpenMRS project was represented there by a number of the team members, and I was able to have a few informal conversations with them. After I got back home, I conducted an interview with Ben Wolfe, who actually wasn’t at the conference, but he talked to me about what the OpenMRS project does, and who is using it in the world, and where it’s going in the future. We also talked a little bit about their Google Summer of Code students. Here’s my conversation with Ben.
