ACTA Update II
Although ACTA is billed as a global treaty, there are only two participants that really matter: the US and the European Union. If either of those dropped out, it would be completely ineffectual. I think the US is unlikely to do that, for two reasons. First, ACTA is essentially the US copyright industries' shopping list of measures that they would like to see forced on the rest of the world: it gives huge benefits to Hollywood and the recording industry, but little to anyone else.

Data Management for Large-scale COVID-19 Immunization: This is all not as simple as it seems
There is a global race for the development of a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Finding a vaccine that works and receives approval is only part of the process. There are a series of other steps that need to be taken so that the vaccine can be delivered. These include the mass production of the vaccine, shipment, administration and record-keeping. This may be even more complex as there may be several vaccines. In this article we review some of these issues with a particular focus on the United States.

Defining An Open Platform for Health IT
It is widely agreed that the future of digital health lies in an “Open Platform”. However, it’s not clear as to exactly what an Open Platform is or how we get there. This blog aims to answer the first question and to provide some guidance on the second. While any given instance of an Open Platform will be a specific implementation of a set of software components owned and operated by a particular organisation (this might be a health and social care organisation or a third party, operating the platform on behalf of a local health and care community), it is most usefully defined by a set of principles rather than the specific details of a particular implementation.

openEHR Community Rises to the Challenge of Coronavirus
The global openEHR community led by the major openEHR vendors DIPS (Norway) and Better (Slovenia) have today released open source components to assist software developers creating applications and services to help those fighting the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. When the first case of Coronavirus arrived in Norway, Bjørn Næss from DIPS (Norway's largest supplier of hospital IT systems) recognised the need to rapidly develop software to help monitor the outbreak, and reduce the data collection burden on overstretched health workers.

openEHR: A Game Changer Comes of Age
I’ve been watching openEHR over more than fifteen years and have always been impressed by its potential to enable us to do things differently, but it’s been a slow burn, with limited take up, particularly in the United Kingdom (UK) where it was invented. However, recent developments mean that I think this is about to change and that openEHR is going to take off in a big way which is going to revolutionize how we think about and do digital health and increase the speed at which we can do it by at least two orders of magnitude. Why do I say this and what evidence is there to support my assertion?

OpenEHR Day
Over the past years, openEHR solutions with a multivendor environment built on an open and agile architecture have proven to be a successful approach to managing electronic healthcare records at any scale. There are several use cases with a focus on electronic health records (EHR) and related systems, validating the vendor-neutral data concept, where universal interoperability among all forms of electronic health data is ensured. To discuss these topics and present successful use cases, you are kindly invited to the 2019 openEHR day being organized by the openEHR Foundation in collaboration with Better and other partners. The event will take place on Monday, October 28, 2019, at SkillsMatter London, United Kingdom. Read More »

openEHR international use-cases: The importance of open data
Cattedra: Crossborder collaboration and regional joint registries. An innovative diagnosis of rare immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in children made possible with openEHR. The Cattedra project set up a joint registry and data exchange on rare diseases for children in the area of paediatric rheumatology using open data. The project connects Italian children’s hospital IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste and Slovenian University Medical Centre Ljubljana (the Division of Paediatrics). With openEHR data models and input forms, the partners aim to share knowledge and work on improving the therapeutic methodologies and diagnostic possibilities of rare immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in children.
