Digital Heath Platform (DHP) Proof-of-Concept Webinar
Steve Rushing, Senior Strategic Adviser to Georgia Institute of Technology’s Healthcare Interoperability and Integration Innovation Lab (I3L), will present methodology and technology insights drawn from the public-private collaboration that built the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Digital Health Platform (DHP) strategy proof-of-concept model. First unveiled to stakeholders in the spring of 2016 by then VA CIO Laverne Council and Under Secretary for Health Dr. David Shulkin, the DHP strategy, in partnership with the VHA, is to be the foundation for a new health care delivery model.
In order to develop this new platform, the VA Office of Information and Technology explored the idea of a collaborative, public-private partnership with the DNA of Silicon Valley companies. The VA and VHA engaged in that collaboration at Georgia Tech’s I3L. Bringing together VA, VHA, ONC, private sector and I3L physicians, clinicians, architects, computer science applied researchers and engineers, the collaboration validated the DHP strategy through proofs of concept demonstrations in September and October. Rushing provided private sector healthcare information technology market and interoperability expertise and was the project’s scrum master.
The proof-of-concept model is designed to address and handle changes in veteran populations, service needs, and care delivery models. Georgia Tech provided agile project management and served as the project’s lead architect and applied researcher. The project team included the VA’s Office of Information and Technology, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), and several private-sector companies that aided with analytics, customer relationship management (CRM), and application program interfaces (APIs).
“This innovative open source project supported by VA will have long term implications in organizing national health IT ecosystems in both the public and the private sector” remarked Seong K. Mun, PhD, President and CEO of OSEHRA. “We are pleased to host this informative webinar for our open source community.”
