Calling all Developers, Designers, and Domain Experts!

In recognition of Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on May 4, 2019, IBM and 42 Silicon Valley are teaming up to host a one-day hackathon to help developers, engineers, designers, and emergency responders work on projects around Natural Disaster Preparedness and Relief during wildfires with a focus on community health and well-being. The hackathon will be held on the 42 Silicon Valley campus in Fremont, California.

This hackathon is a satellite event for the Call for Code 2019 Global Challenge (developer.ibm.com/callforcode). The hackathon provides a chance for you to dedicate time to brainstorm, plan, and start building your submission for the Global Challenge which closes on July 29. Projects built at the hackathon will be judged at the end of the day for a local grand prize. Note that Call for Code is a developer challenge supported by IBM Code and Response, which is a four-year initiative dedicated to the creation and deployment of open source solutions.

Developers have revolutionized the way people live and interact with virtually everyone and everything. Where most people see challenges, developers see possibilities. That’s why David Clark Cause launched Call for Code in 2018 alongside Founding Partner IBM. This multi-year global initiative is a rallying cry to developers to use their skills and mastery of the latest technologies, and to create new ones, to drive positive and long-lasting change across the world with their code. The second annual Call for Code Challenge theme is natural disaster preparedness and relief in the context of community health and well-being. Developers are called on to create practical, effective, and high-quality applications based on cloud, data, and artificial intelligence that can have both an immediate and lasting impact.

The 2018 wildfire season was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire season on record in California, with a total of 8,527 fires burning an area of 1,893,913 acres, the largest amount of burned acreage recorded in a fire season. The fires caused more than $3.5 billion (2018 USD) in damages. 98 residents and 6 firefighters were killed, and more than 18,000 structures were destroyed.

Californians have a unique perspective that can help drive innovation in this field.  Developers, makers, and builders have lived through disasters and know what is at stake. Bring your best!
