Episciences Project To Create arXiv Open Access Journals

A group of mathematicians is launching a series of free-of-charge open access journals containing articles from Cornell University's arXiv server, thereby posing increasing competition for academic publishers.The initiative, which is called the Episciences Project, is sponsored by France's Centre pour la Communication Scientifique Directe (CCSD), in collaboration with the Institut Fourier at Grenoble University.

As Tom Gowers, a Fields Medal winning mathematician from the University of Cambridge, explains in a blog posting, the group's plan is to create the journals as a directory structure in the form of a clickable table of contents. Planned journals would thus take the form of a collection of links to preprint versions of papers on arXiv.
