MedVirginia Achieves Live Status with VLER
MedVirginia announced today that it has achieved another significant milestone: becoming the first community health information exchange (HIE) to connect with the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER). VLER is a collaboration between Veterans Affairs (VA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and civilian health systems to connect the health records of our nation’s active duty military personnel and Veterans.

BROOKLYN, N.Y., and SAN DIEGO—Lutheran Medical Center (LMC) and Medsphere Systems Corporation today announced the successful implementation of Medsphere’s OpenVista® electronic health record (EHR) solution throughout the hospital. The full service 476-bed teaching hospital is now on track to achieve meaningful use and qualify for millions of dollars made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Since implementing OpenVista only a few weeks ago, LMC has embraced the comprehensive open source health IT system throughout the facility.

Don't Repeat the UK's Electronic Health Records Failure
How do we avoid the UK's failure? The administration or Congress should slow down the program and delete those parts of the legislation that fine doctors for not using this technology. There's no need to have this system in place by 2014. Instead, we should conduct rigorous studies of the cost-effectiveness of electronic health records systems before mandating their use.
