Halamka on the Most Important Interoperability Story of 2016
Halamka on What's Next for Electronic Health Records
With the Department of Justice announcement of the $155 million dollar eClinicalWorks settlement (including personal liability for the CEO, CMO and COO), many stakeholders are wondering what’s next for EHRs. Clearly the industry is in a state of transition. eCW will be distracted by its 5 year corporate integrity agreement. AthenaHealth will have to focus on the activist investors at Elliott Management who now own 10% of the company and have a track record of changing management/preparing companies for sale. As mergers and acquisitions result in more enterprise solutions, Epic (and to some extent Cerner) will displace other vendors in large healthcare systems. However, the ongoing operational cost of these enterprise solutions will cause many to re-examine alternatives such as Meditech...

Halamka's Reflections on US Health IT Policy Trajectory
I’m in China this week, meeting with government, academia, and industry leaders in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou. The twelve hour time difference means that I can work a day in China, followed by a day in Boston. For the next 7 days, I’ll truly be living on both sides of the planet. I recently delivered this policy update about the key developments in healthcare IT policy and sentiment over the past 90 days. I’ve not written a specific summary of the recently released Quality Patient Program proposed rule which provides the detailed regulatory guidance for implementation of MACRA/MIPS, but here’s the excellent 26 page synopsis created by CMS which provides an overview of the 1058 page rule...

Health Information Exchanges vendors prove tech fitness but only a fraction of initiatives will cross siloes to achieve real interoperability by 2017, reveals Black Book
Health Information Exchanges vendors prove tech fitness but only a fraction of initiatives will cross siloes to achieve real interoperability by 2017, reveals Black Book In 2004, President George W. Bush decreed that within ten years, the US would achieve an environment of shared, private and authorized electronic health records, but as the ten year mark came and passed, Black Book’s latest HIE stakeholder survey discovered such a secure, robust exchange of US patient records is undeniably at least another ten years out. New federal grants aim to resuscitate failing state and regional public HIEs, but a growing number of IT vendors are drastically cutting further interoperability research and development funding. HIMSS13: A Fork in the Road - How Patients & Payment Are Forcing 'Open' Health IT
This year feels like a fork in the road at HIMSS13, with disruptive forces of patients, digital health, mobility and open standards driving innovation and renewed energy at the annual conference...Without transparency (in health IT and health finance) and data liquidity, bending the cost curve will continue to elude the U.S. health system. At the recently concluded annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference in New Orleans, 34,696 got to experience a yin and yang vibe that embodies the disruption that the health care IT industry is undergoing. That is, the full-on face-off between developers of health IT that have been long-closed to data liquidity and those vendors innovating on open standards and cloud-based platforms. Read More »
HIMSS16: Cloudera Demos Open Source Precision Medicine and Healthcare Enterprise Data Hub
As the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2016 theme implies -- “transforming health through IT” -- healthcare organizations are increasingly focused on taking advantage of big data to personalize the patient experience and improve clinical outcomes. Cloudera’s commitment to this effort was exemplified this morning, when the company annunced its contributions to President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI). By implementing Cloudera Enterprise, healthcare organizations are better equipped to deliver precision medicine with a modern data platform that facilitates information sharing across silos while remaining HIPAA-compliant...

Hospital Nurses Forced To Develop Creative Workarounds To Deal With EHR System Flaws; Outdated Technologies And Lack Of Interoperability, Reveals Black Book
The most instrumental stakeholders of hospital EHR success are undeniably nurses, yet 98% of licensed RN’s agree that they have never been included in hospital technology decisions or design. 13,650 US nurses, a group rarely surveyed as the prime users of inpatient technologies, responded to Black Book’s Q3 2014 EHR Loyalty Poll addressing the difficulties of systems selected by non-clinicians and the impact on patient care...

Hospitals Remain Underinvested in Costing Technologies, Black Book ERP Survey Results
An inert healthcare enterprise resource planning software sector grew less than 2 percent in 2015 as hospitals turned available technology funding to conflicting priorities such as ICD 10 conversions, cybersecurity, population health and analytics, with less than 29 percent of all US hospitals having implemented any ERP product. As provider executives face compounding value-based risk decisions, recent interest in ERP has climbed sharply according to a recent Black Book survey of 1,158 health system procurement and technology leaders in the fourth quarter of 2016....
