JP Systems Awarded $100M from the V.A. For Foundational Data Standards Work
J P Systems, Inc. was awarded a $100 million (ceiling) contract from the Veteran's Administration to standardize medical terminologies. The overall purpose of the work is that of patient safety. When doctors use standard terms, healthcare providers all over the world are better able to understand the details of patient records written by different doctors over many decades, even in different countries and languages. Continuity and accuracy count a great deal. As Dr. Robert M. Califf, Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research from Duke University says: "People are dying because we don't use the same names for the same things!"

Keeping Everyone in the Know: New CMS ADT Rule
On March 9, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule aimed at enhancing interoperability and increasing patient access to health information. This Final Rule contains a new Condition of Participation (CoP) that requires all hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, and Critical Access Hospitals to electronically share (via an electronic health record [EHR] or another electronic administrative system) event notifications (also referred as e-notifications) with other providers across the continuum of care. These event notifications should occur whenever patients have an emergency department (ED) or inpatient admission, discharges, or transfers (also known as ADTs) in community hospitals.

Key Architect of VA’s Open Source Strategy Elected Chairman of the Board of OSEHRA
The Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance (OSEHRA) announced today that Mike O’Neill, CEO of MedicaSoft, has been elected Chairman of the OSEHRA Board of Directors. O’Neill, an architect of VA’s open source strategy and a thought leader in the open source community, has served several years on the Board and was most recently re-elected in September 2015 as a representative of OSEHRA’s Organizational Members. He assumed the Chairmanship on October 6. “It is an honor to be chosen for this role,” said O’Neill. “This is an exciting time for OSEHRA, with the new Federal Government policy on open source reaffirming our mission and impact.”
