VistA for the NHS
So in conclusion I have a different vision for VistA in the NHS than the NHS Campaign for VistA. However, we both want to see an NHS version of VistA and we both want to see it widely implemented. So let not worry about where we hope and think this should lead. Looking at the NHS Campaign for VistA’s 8 point plan http://nhsvista.net/our-ambition/ The first six steps align broadly with what I want to see happen so lets get on an do it and see where it leads us which I suspect might be a different than any of us currently expect.

VistA Is A Rival to Epic and Cerner in Major Deployments of EHR Systems
According to a recent article in Healthcare IT News, Intermountain Healthcare has just signed a multi-year contract to deploy Cerner electronic health record (EHR) systems. The article claims that "only two companies – Epic and Cerner – seem to be in competition for the large and complex deployments." VistA open source will ‘morph’ to VA-DOD joint EHR, VA CIO says
The joint electronic health record for the Veterans Affairs and Defense Departments will in effect be open source when it is complete, according to a senior VA official, who provided more details about how that will occur. VistA Expo 2011
The much anticipated VISTAExpo & Symposium 2011 conference has just issued a call for papers as well as trainers for their educational tracks and tutorial sessions. VISTAExpo is a four-day conference for activists and members of the VistA ecosystem, current users as well as potential adopters. It will be held from November 17-20 in Redmond, Washington. Papers and presentations are due by September 15. The conference organizers are looking for presenters on topics related to one of their four tracks as well as experienced VistA trainers to give tutorials for a large number of VistA “newbies” and potential users who are expected to attend. VISTAExpo is being organized primarily by the VISTA Expertise Network.

25th VistA Community Meeting
The 25th VistA Community Meeting is just a month away and again promises to be a very exciting and informative meeting. Presentations will cover all aspects of VistA, from the strategic with presentations by VA CIO Roger Baker and Michael O'Neill, Senior Advisor, VA Innovation Initiative (VAi2), Dr. Seung Ki Mun, the CEO of OSEHRA will speak about the extrordinary growth of the open source organization. Becky Monroe form the VA will talk about the enourmous repository to VistA knowleege and educational materials that have been made publicly available by the Va. Technical sessions will include presentations by Rob Tweed, George Lilly and K.S Bhaskar, and presentations by key VistA adopters. Stay tuned for regular updates.

NASA, State Department and Veteran Affairs Innovation Initiative Host Open Source Summit
Registration for the second Open Source Summit, hosted by NASA, the U.S. State Department and the Veteran Affairs Innovation Initiative to advance the use of open source software in government, is under way. The event will be held June 20-21 at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
The summit will convene leaders from government and industry as well as software practitioners to discuss the development, release and use of open source software, which is characterized by a collaborative development process and free user access.
Discussion topics will include the current and future state of the government open source community, how-to insights for open source projects in government, real-world projects and their successes and challenges, and government procurement of open source software.

28th VistA Community Meeting
Former VA CIO Roger Baker and Oroville Hospital CEO Robert Wentz will be addressing the 28th Vista Community Meeting (VCM) in Sacramento, CA in what promises to be one most important conferences of the VistA community to date. The conference, which takes place January 17-19 at the UC Davis School of Medicine campus in Sacramento, CA will feature a stellar cast of Health IT leaders. In addition to Baker and Wentz, conference speakers include Dr. Seong Ki Mun, Chairman of OSEHRA, Howard Hays, CIO of the Indian Health Service (IHS), Theresa Cullen, Chief Medial Informatics Officer (CMIO) of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Stephen Oxley, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Central Regional Hospital in North Carolina, and Denise LeFevre, CIO of Oroville Hospital.

Red Hat Summit 2014
Red Hat will hold its 10th annual Red Hat Summit at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from April 14-17, 2014. The Red Hat Summit brings together thought leaders and executives from across the technology industry to participate in keynotes and sessions on community, innovation, collaboration and customer success. This year's conference will feature a session on Red Hat technology in healthcare that will feature Dr. Seung Ki Mun from OSEHRA.
The session, which will be featured as a town hall meeting on Wednesday, April 16th, will also feature Don Frederick, Senior solution architect, Red Hat, Rob Barker, Director of Application Development at Cigna, and Brijesh Kalidindi, Senior IT manager, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan.

Ibáñez to Discuss Teaching the RDF Framework for use in Medical Data Sharing During vxJourney Program
Luis Ibáñez, one of the best known advocates of open source solutions in healthcare will be interviewed Wednesday, May 14, by Fabian Lopez in the popular vxJourney weekly webinar. Ibanez will be discussing the importance of teaching the Resource Description Framework (RDF) in college courses. RDF is a framework that facilitates the consistent representation of data and is a core element of what is called the Semantic Web. It's use in the context of sharing medical information is highly relevant for personal EHRs, health care exchanges, patient registries, and public health research.
