Open Health IT Company Receives Investment to Drive Interoperability and Disaster Response

MITRE crowdsourcing analytics to bolster cybersecurity
Threat detection response has historically been more reactive than proactive. Organizations often wait until suspicious activity occurs on the system to find bad actors, and intrusions are commonly difficult to detect. While perimeter security is crucial, in this era of highly-sophisticated cyberattacks, it’s no longer enough. To that extent, MITRE has been working to partner with the National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center (NH-ISAC) to research cyberthreat tactics and share those results with hospitals and communities through its Adversarial Tactics, Techniques, and Common Knowledge (ATT&CK) analytics method.

Pineapple Fund Supports Software Freedom Conservancy with Bitcoin Donation
Software Freedom Conservancy thanks the Pineapple Fund and its anonymous backer for its recent donation of over 18 Bitcoin (approximately $250,000). The Pineapple Fund is run by an early Bitcoin adopter to give about $86 million worth of Bitcoin to various charities. Shortly after the fund’s announcement earlier this month, volunteers and Conservancy staff members applied for its support. That application was granted this week.

HHS Announces Winners of the HHS Opioid Code-a-Thon
On December 6 and 7, HHS hosted a first-of-its-kind two-day Code-a-Thon to help turn data into lifesaving solutions to the opioid epidemic. Fifty teams, comprised of three to five members of computer programmers, public health advocates, and innovators worked for over 24 hours to create data-driven solutions that can have immediate and practical impact on the opioid crisis. “HHS’ code-a-thon was a major step forward in the efforts to use data to address the opioid crisis,” said Acting HHS Secretary Eric Hargan. “The innovative ideas developed today could turn into tomorrow’s solutions as we work to combat the scourge of opioid addiction sweeping the nation. On behalf of the administration, I commend all of our technology partners and the HHS staff for their hard work on this unprecedented event.”
