MedStar Research Team Links Electronic Health Record (EHR) Usability Issues to Potential Patient Harm
Specific types of electronic health record (EHR) usability issues are associated with a variety of potentially serious patient harm events, according to a study released by MedStar Health researchers with the National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare. This study, which was published today by the Journal of the American Medical Association, is the first one of its kind to reach this conclusion, and it underscores the need for more and better collaboration among EHR vendors, providers and health systems, and other stakeholders, as well as a reexamination of federal policies for improved usability.

Missing from MACRA: 2 Meaningful Use millstones
Physicians are now free from reporting on two major Meaningful Use requirements, but some doctors may not be aware of this long-sought change that became effective Jan 1. While it is hard to say how many physicians are in the dark about the change, there are anecdotal reports that some doctors don’t know that the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) final rule agreed with AMA’s call to drop computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and clinical decision support (CDS) from Medicare’s payment program. Moorfield's OpenEyes catches award judges’ eyes
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for a clinical IT leadership award for OpenEyes, its open source electronic patient record system, in the E-Health Insider (EHI) Awards 2012. New Software from Kitware Virtualizes Medical Education and Training
Kitware added to its collection of open source toolkits with the first release of the interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK). The toolkit offers manufacturers and researchers all the software components they need to build and test virtual simulators for medical training and planning. "iMSTK, which we've been developing in close collaboration with Professor Suvranu De's research center - the Center for Modeling, Simulation and Imaging in Medicine at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - is meant to empower developers to rapidly prototype virtual simulator applications," said Andinet Enquobahrie, the director of medical computing at Kitware.

New Study Shows Patients Prefer Immediate Access to Test Results and have Unmet Information Needs
A recent study of 8,000 patients that accessed their test results via an online patient portal found that more than 95% wanted to continue to immediately receive test results through their portal. That percentage stayed at 95% when focused on patients with non-normal results. These findings come amid concerns that the immediate release of test results could lead to patient distress when patients access test results before their physicians could contact them and help to interpret those results...since the ONC information blocking regulations became applicable to health care providers on April 5, 2021, a patient may be able to access test results in parallel to those results’ availability to the ordering clinician.
