Google, Inc. will be joining PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) and its partners in a bid to win the favor of the Pentagon as it seeks to modernize its EHR infrastructure. The PwC team, which also includes DSS, MedSphere, and General Dynamics Technology, is facing stiff competition from its rivals, but hopes its open-source offering will become even more attractive to the Department of Defense with the backing of the tech giant’s significant resources and experience. OSEHRA 2016: Call for Abstract Submissions for Open Source Conference
OSEHRA will be holding its annual Summit June 27 through June 29 in Bethesda, Maryland. Over the past several years the OSEHRA Summit has become the leading confernce for the VistA community as well as the Open HealthIT community. This year the conference will be expanding with a half-day focused on Open Health IT presentations. The 2016 OSEHRA Open Source Summit Program Committee invites abstract submissions for presentations, roundtables, and posters by March 8, 2016.

OSEHRA Awarded VA Open Source Technical Support Contract
The Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance (OSEHRA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Open Source Technical Support and Working Group Services for VA VistA Contract by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The contract scope includes identifying and analyzing available open source software that fulfills VA requirements or enhances functionality, as well as support for Technical Working Groups through which VA can collaborate with the open source community.

PwC Announces Google, Inc. is on the PwC Team Bidding for the Department of Defense Healthcare Management Systems Modernization Program
PwC US today announced Google Inc. is a part of the PwC team in the bid for the Department of Defense (DoD) Healthcare Management Systems Modernization (DHMSM) Electronic Health Record (EHR) contract. The DHMSM program will replace and modernize the Military Health System (MHS), which currently supports more than 9.7 million beneficiaries, including active duty, retirees and their dependents.

The Right Way to Modernize VA's VistA EHR: Shift Development to the Private Sector and the Cloud
While changes to VistA are warranted and necessary, trashing the entire system because one component may be flawed makes little sense from technological or financial perspectives. The VA scheduling scandal was the product of an agency overwhelmed by veterans returning from two theaters of war. VA TO EMPLOYEES — ZIP YOUR LIPS ON EHRs: Some VA IT officials Arthur [Allen] has spoken to this week got emails instructing them to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the Cerner deal with the agency. The emails were directed to people who “have been selected to participate in the planning for an electronic health acquisition,” and it prohibits them from discussing “all data, information and software” related to the purchase.

OSEHRA Innovation Webinar - SQL Access to VistA
SQL access to VistA for reporting and analytics requires two core technologies: (a) an SQL engine; and (b) mapping Fileman files to SQL tables that the SQL engine can use to access data. Although there are many SQL engines, there are few combinations of (a) and (b) that work well, and none that both work well and are free/open source software (FOSS). YottaDB is developing Octo, an SQL engine, and %VISTAOCTO, an adaptable tool, that generates an SQL Schema from Fileman tables. Both are FOSS.
